Regina inhaled appreciatively - - -

"You see, Regina is right on about there being many similarities between Jewish and Italian cooking!" said Nick, "You see, Rome was more than just a religious and political center with certain foods standing out as pure Romano. In fact quite a few foods that were thought to be typically Italian actually have Jewish origins.

"See, people have a way of turning things around and attributing ownership when it's not accurate," said Regina, "For instance because Jews lived in Poland and Russia for so long many dishes of both countries are not even considered Jewish in Europe - like herring in sour cream, rye bread and borscht, which are considered as Jewish in the United States. Other dishes like gefilte fish and bagels, though probably not created by

Jews, are all considered to be Jewish."

white collar worker,' Vergil mused as he watched the men at work, 'always on the inside,looking out. As far as life is concerned, we should declare bankruptcy. There's nothing here all day except a shit storm of paper!'

"The gods had condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly roll a rock to the top of a mountain, whense the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought with some reason there is no more dreadful punishment than futile and hopeless labor.

The workman of today works everyday in his life at the same tasks, and this fate is no lessabsurd. But it is tragic only at the rare moments it becomes conscious.

Don Juanism

Vergil picked up the dog-eared "Myth of Sisyphus" that was on his nightstand and turned to the section on Don Juanism.

"If it were sufficient to love, things would be too easy the more one loves, the stronger the absurdity grows. It is not through lack of love that Don Juan goes from woman to woman---But it is indeed because he loves them with the same passion and each time with his whole self, that he must repeat his gift and his proud quest--At last exclaims one of them, "I have given you love".

Can we be surprised that Don Juan laughs at this? "At last No" he says, "but once more". Why should it be essential to love rarely in order to love much?--as for satiety, Don Juan insists upon it, on the contrary. If he leaves a woman, it is not absolutely because he has ceased to desire her. A beautiful woman is always desirable. But he desires another and no, this is not the same thing.

"Wow!" Vergil thought. "Maybe I'm on to somthing here! Don Juan did it and got away with it. Could I?" "And now, another vexing problem exploded in Vergil's brain. What am I going to do about Regina? Yes, Regina!"

Perdita Experanza was not his only conquest. There was another woman - older, more experienced. Regina Lazar - a 32 year old divorcee with a young daughter loomed in his conscience. Vergil unhappily thought about his on-again-off again sexual relationship this past year with Regina. Vergil was facing turning 30 in a few months, yet felt like a child in this relationship. They were on-and-off mainly because they drank, smoked, argued and screamed at each other before or after sex or both.

They would break up, cool off, then get back together - an obvious dysfunctional cycle. VergilThe recent news from Regina that she was pregnant with his child.

"What am I going to do about Regina? Hell! What am I going to do with Perdita?"

Author Roger SeLegue has written a riveting novel of the complexities and absurdity of life based upon the essay The Myth Of Sisyphus by existentialist writer Albert Camus. "No Sun Without Shadow" is a complex story involving its principle characters, Vergil Tynan who identifies with Sisyphus and who is stuck in a low-level employee job in a large insurance company.

Vergil's only escape and ability to cope with his angst and situation is sex with wild and electrifying Regina, who is Jewish while Vergil is Catholic. The thrill and danger of scuba diving with his good friend Nick doesn't seem to be enough to alleviate the growing dissatisfaction of his life either. He also immerses himself in Camus' Sisyphus essay and begins a dangerous downward spiral of living out the reluctant heroes path.

Further complicating his life is his passionate and volatile relationship with Regina, which produces a baby. Now adding to their strain is what religion do they raise their child? Finally Vergil begins to ask the question posed by Camus, "Is life worth living? Does the absurd dictate death?"

In a novel craftily written, with eloquent detail, outstanding character development and conflict, Roger SeLegue has written a superb novel that speaks to each of us!
